When roads are too wide, cars drive too fast. When cars drive too fast, walking and biking becomes more dangerous. This stretch of Nottingham Rd is currently ~...40 feet wide, almost double the width that is needed. I brought this to the attention of DPW staff who mocked up a safer configuration that reduces each travel lane from 20’ to 10’. This type of change is very inexpensive and while our spring striping budget has been cut due to Covid, I’m hopeful that this improvement can be made soon. Approximately 1 in 4 households in Syracuse do not have access to a car. The correlation between those living in poverty and those without access to a car is very high, so one of the best ways that we can make life better for those living in poverty is to make Syracuse easier to navigate without a car. The city has 100’s of stretches just like this and I’m hopeful that going forward we can be more intentional about how we make infrastructure safer for all users.
