Happy Father’s Day to all from the WSTC!!

West Side Tennis Club 07.07.2021

On this Juneteenth, we recognize our past and look forward with hope towards our future. Today we also celebrate the great champions of Forest Hills Arthur Ashe and Althea Gibson as well as the countless others who have left their mark on society and our sport.

The 1972 US Open final pitted Ilie Nastase against hometown favorite and 1968 champion Arthur Ashe. The flamboyant Romanian defeated Ashe in a five set thriller; his first grand slam win after finals losses at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Nastase would go on to win the French Open and claim the world number one ranking the following year, but he never again tasted US Open glory, his best result being a semifinal appearance in 1976 at Forest Hills.... #tennis #instatennis #tennishistory #tennislegend #usopen #throwback #throwbackthursday #ilienastase

Tactics Tip!when do you slice? In a fast paced topspin rally, launching a deep, low slice at your opponent’s feet is a smart play to throw them off their rhythm while also giving you a chance to recover and get back into an attacking position. If you have an opponent who likes playing deep in the court, the slice can also be used as a transition from baseline to net. Make your opponent uncomfortable by drawing them in unexpectedly, but be sure to follow your slice to the ne...t as well. Your surprised opponent will likely give you a weak return, setting up an easy volley or overhead! #tennis #instatennis #nyctennis #tennistraining #tennistips #tennisplayer #playforesthills

Throwback to the 1968 US Open, when Arthur Ashe won his first Grand Slam title over Tom Okker. Even though Ashe won the tournament, he was still registered as an amateur and therefore not entitled to the $14,000 prize. Ashe also played in the doubles final in 1968, falling to Americans Stan Smith and Bob Lutz. #tennis #instatennis #nyctennis #tennishistory #usopen #usopentennis #arthurashe #foresthills #throwback #throwbackthursday
