Whelan Bros. & Hulchanski Funeral Home Deceased: Thomas J. Donato, July 17, 2020 This man is beloved. Thomas J. Donato, 61, died on July 17, 2020 after a brief illness. A loving son, a loyal friend, a cherished brother and beloved uncle, Tommy spread kindness and love sprinkled with a dash of humor everywhere he went. He prided himself on being the first man to send flowers to his young nieces and baseball cards to his nephews. His gentle manner ...was perfect for his chosen profession as a respiratory therapist. Whether it was caring for babies in the NICU, or saving patients as part of a helicopter transport team in Roanoke, Virginia, or tending to clients as part of Franciscan Health, Tommy’s presence calmed as his skills supported those needing help. Our world lost a wonderful man on this day who will be greatly missed. Tommy was predeceased by his mothers’ Lois Ann Donato (‘67) and Dolores Donato (‘16), as well as loving grandparents and dear aunts and uncles. Tommy leaves behind a legacy of family including his dad, Samuel Donato, siblings Susan (Thomas) LaFex, Katharine Donato, Stephen (Jane) Donato, Arlene (Peter) Kick, Richard (Lori) Briggmann, Thomas Briggmann, Kathleen (Joseph) O’Connor, Donna (Randy) Clement, Mathew (Anne) Donato, Elizabeth (Tom) Moran, and Mark Donato. His children in his life were his twenty-two nieces and nephews, with whom he shared joys and sorrows, successes and set backs, great guidance, warm support and unwavering belief in their goodness and their potential. Twelve more grand nieces and nephews followed, and the light in their eyes and laughter in their bodies delighted when they saw Uncle Tommy. An avid sports fan, Tommy’s revered Yankees were ever on his mind. Tommy could quote titles, wins, series, stats, special moments and legacy players without hesitation. He spoke of one day volunteering at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown to be with like minded fans. Tommy’s other favorite teams were the New York Giants and the New York Rangers. He now resides with the greats. There will be two memorial services, 1st in Mineola, New York, his hometown on July 31, 2020 at St. Aidan’s Church, Williston Park, New York. The other will be in Syracuse, New York TBD. Contributions may be made to your local Little League Baseball and Local Domestic Violence groups. Striping will be done tomorrow or Friday. Highly recommend Smith Seal, excellent job, friendly and efficient crew.
