We take pride in the fact that we have hosted a truly illustrious clientele since the Tavern’s opening in 1880. We have been known as a favorite haunt for literary giants like Dylan Thomas, Norman Mailer, Hunter S.Thompson, Jack Kerouac, Jane Jacobs and James Baldwin. Today whilst we wish all of you a fine day, we would like to repeat one of Mr.James Baldwin’s quotes, as we are all living in a challenging moment in time. Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced. After an unfortunate temporary period of closure, WE’RE BACK!!!!!! Outdoor patio service resumes Tuesday, Sept 15th. Limited indoor dining resumes Sept 30th Our beautiful new outdoor patio is open air and tables are separated with appropriate distance. We open under strict observance of all NYC rules pertaining to outdoor dining. All customers must be seated and order through servers. All customers must consume food with their beverages. Sad day friends. Our beloved White Horse Tavern is temporarily closed for business. The State Liquor Authority has suspended our license until further notice. We had multiple violations for over crowding on our sidewalk and street cafe that the city granted as a lifeline to help save local restaurants. We are the first to admit we were overwhelmed with the demand and weren’t prepared with the staff to deal with the over crowding. We attempted to adapt and come up with solutio...ns to keep our patrons and staff safe and still remain in business. Nobody is above the law, we aren’t asking for special treatment. But I hope people realize that this new way of doing business was thrust upon us. There is no perfect way to deal with hundreds of people showing up out of the blue. We did our best and continued to try and work towards what was asked of us. We love this neighborhood and hope that our beloved landmark Tavern will be open to serve you again one day, hopefully soon. We would hate to think our historic Tavern where Dylan Thomas sat, as did James Baldwin, Jack Kerouac, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison etc is gasping its last breaths. That would be a tragedy. Friends-After a very long period of closing our beloved Tavern in accordance with City ordinance, our patio is now open for spaced seating and pick up of to go orders. We are delighted by the overwhelming response, and seeing our old friends again has been a pleasure. Still, we must remind you, that we are all still in the midst of this pandemic. We ask that all patrons wear masks, and we must enforce strict distancing guidelines. While we too want the good times back, safety... must be our first priority.
