Researchers at the Univ. of Illinois studied changes in the brain during alcohol withdrawal, and were able to identify a particular protein that is created during withdrawal that is associated with depression. They were able to block the creation of this protein in rats which led to reductions in anhedonia. They think this may be helpful in humans to reduce continued drinking due to self-medication of depression during withdrawal. Fascinating! #alcoholism #withdrawal #depression https://bit.ly/3iWmlhY

This recent study showed that extended release naltrexone (Vivitrol) reduces drinking days and heavy drinking days per month compared with placebo. What I find fascinating is that people had greater reductions the longer they stayed on the medication. This argues for sticking with it, even if you only see a modest return the first month! #alcoholawareness #recovery #treatmentworks #vivitrol https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34033183/

This past weekend we lost a hero in our field, Dr. Mary Jeanne Kreek. This video honors her memory and the incredible work she did to understand opioid use disorder and the treatments for it. In addition to being a ground breaking researcher and mentor to countless students, she was a humanist who helped reduce stigma surrounding addiction. This video tells her story.
