Here's some helpful (and accurate) information regarding the recent outbreaks of EHV-1. Unfortunately, horses in Westchester County have now tested positive, so we all need to be very cautious and aware in the weeks ahead. As always, practice good hygiene, keep new horses separated from the existing population for a minimum of 2 weeks, and call you veterinarian if you notice any unusual symptoms. Please give us a call if you have any specific questions or concerns. ... https://aaep.org/horsehealth/faq-equine-herpesvirus-ehv

Dr. Kaela Choquette had the pleasure of attending the Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue talk a couple weeks ago. Here are some tid bits: #1 PREVENTION is key. Check your gates and fences, make sure your electrical system is up to code, etc, the best way to avoid an emergency is to prevent it!... #2 Make sure your address is accurate on GPS and well marked at the roadside. In case of an emergency at home, the last thing you need is the person responding to not be able to find you. #3 Make friends with your local emergency responders. Call up your local fire station and ask them to do a walk through of your barn. Firefighters are trained to look for potential hazards, if they’re able to come to your facility, they might catch something that you wouldn’t. #4 Buy appropriate fire extinguishers. The best bet at preventing a small fire from becoming a devastating one is quick and aggressive extinguishing. This can be accomplished with a hand held extinguisher, as long as it’s functioning, readily available and with an appropriate capacity. Ask your fire department about this as well!

Stay cool this weekend! Adding some Gatorade, apple juice, or a handful of sweet feed to a bucket of water can be a good trick to encourage your horses to drink. #minisofinstagram #willowlaneequine #heatwave

Happy Thanksgiving from Willow Lane Equine! Here’s two lucky turkeys that live at a farm we take care of. I’m sure they’re extra grateful today!
