Cooking and eating next to a fireplace feels such a luxury, yet for generations before us all cooking was done in and over an open fire in the kitchen. With no ovens or electricity all meals were prepared on the hearths of brick fireplaces and it’s fascinating to learn about different types of fires and flames to prepare different types of food. For example, a controllable fire was used to roast and toast, while boiling and stewing required a smaller flame.
