Concert Coming!

Winds in the Wilderness Concerts 22.11.2020

Concert Coming! Mixing classical and jazz, traditional and modern, eastern and western music in every program, Winds in the Wilderness is appreciated for the range and scope of its repertoire and the versatility of its musicians. It is not likely, therefor, that we would present a ‘thematic’ program. Yet, our upcoming concert has a theme! Such is the power of Baroque music that it has influenced, even obsessed, modern jazz musicians like Claude Bolling, the Modern Jazz Quart...et, Brazilian classical composer Villa-Lobos, and shown it’s many moods in the simple song, single line instrument and multi-voiced chamber music. Come trace the thread of Baroque across centuries and genres - in all but one piece - as we play: ‘Baroque and Blue’ from Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio by Claude Bolling ‘Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5’ by Hector Villa-Lobos Quartet Opus 19 No.1 by JC Bach ‘Blues in A Minor’ by the Modern Jazz Quartet ‘Meine Seele Hort’ by GF Handel Suite No.5 for Cello (Viola) by JS Bach ‘’Thunder Over the Dry Fields’ for Chinese pipa See you there! ~Sharon Powers See more

July 6, 2019 Dear Friends, You are joyful listeners! We know that you won’t want to miss our next concert on Wednesday, August 7, 2019, 5:30 PM... at Church of St. John in the Wilderness, Copake Falls, NY (See poster below for more details.) We receive many comments from our audience that inspire us in our pursuit of unique and innovative programs, like this one two weeks ago: Thanks for another extraordinary performance and brilliant offering from Winds in the Wilderness on Sunday. What a perfect blend of sound, insight, creativity and place. Just magical! I will look forward to your program on 8/7. Our concert on August 7th features renowned trumpet player Allan Dean. I can barely express how exciting it is to have Allan play with us and to develop a program that embraces, for the first time, brass. ~ The program opens with a ‘Sinfonia' by Giuseppe Torelli for trumpet solo accompanied by our small ( but sincere!) orchestra of four. ~ Then, as promised, we will play another movement of the Claude Bolling 'Suite for flute and jazz piano.’ ~ Meet us on the street in Rio de Janeiro. We are the choro band on the corner; you are our percussionists! ~ Our rendition of ‘Carnival of Venice,' variations based on a Neapolitan folk song, features trumpet - but can you guess the original composer/performer of this piece? ~ True to our reputation for programming unusual instrumental combinations, you will hear an intriguing and beautiful duet for trumpet and double bass by William Presser. ~ Our Baroque offering of solo works by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by master violist Ronald Gorevic, is the cello Suite No. 4. ~ Then there will be jazz, and Piazzolla. See you on Wednesday, August 7th at 5:30 and for the reception following the concert, Cheers, Sharon .
