From John Barnes: I have no proof, but An increasing number of synchronicities have been happening to me lately. Synchronicities comes from the famous psychiatrist Carl Jung’s philosophy which are meaningful coincidences. I’m sure you’ve all had these happen. I believe that synchronicities are our intuition’s way of guiding us. The problem is that Channel 5, our intellectual side, tends to distract us and tell us it’s not important, to maintain its status quo and stay in i...Continue reading

Bringing it back to self care.... foam rollers. Hi Everyone, I have gotten some private questions from past SES participants about the different foam rollers ...they saw our staff utilize with patients when they were in the treatment center for their week of training. Some had even purchased a few types for personal use and for their practices but were not being successful in getting their patients (and themselves) to follow through with self treatment, incorporating the rollers. They wanted our handouts, thinking that was the issue. Common thread when it comes to rollers, people buy them and then just put them away. The right tool for the right focus with the right introduction is the key. I feel when you correctly match up these three variables, success is that much easier to attain. So, we did a little video going over some of the different rollers we have in our treatment center and then I shared how I get my patients who are hesitant on staying on the rollers for any length of time, to ease into the technique. Like John F Barnes has shared with us in so many ways, it all comes down to quieting the mind and focusing within. Being present is where all the magic happens. I have to share that I had a bit of a challenge doing this video. It was a beautiful day outside and there were people EVERYWHERE around our treatment center and they were not practicing social distancing! People swimming past us in the creek, parking and stopping in our parking lot, coming to the door and trying to talk me into letting them come into the center to use the bathroom as I was being recorded, through the windows, people climbing down the hillside and slipping , all in my view, etc, When we usually see this type of behavior , we usually have to go and remind people they are on private property and to move along. At one point, a very large ,brutish kind of guy, appeared outside behind the person recording the video and just was staring at me ( I thought, this was my first Bigfoot sighting!!) he ended up being a delivery guy named Merle, just doing his job. So, when I appear a little lost for the right words, just assume there is someone acting a bit crazy somewhere in my view and I am fighting that urge to go outside and say something to them. Let us know what you what you do with your patients and in your own self care. Share it if you are inclined. Anyway, hope you find this useful. After posting about cloth face masks, I really feel the need to clarify the use of these. I'm speaking from many yrs as a surgical team member. A little history...All surgical masks were made of cloth in the past. Surgical teams understood that the mask was not totally effective in preventing the spread of bacterial/viral infection. During surgeries, talking was kept to a minimum and hand signals were utilized. Once your cloth mask becomes moist from breathing, sneezing, cou...ghing, etc, it then becomes a carrier.. Not a projector. Now masks are made of materials that resist that moisture Another point is that the virus looks huge on TV but we're talking microns which are easily transmitted through material. So.. the cloth mask MAY prevent a virus from getting to someone from you ...only if they are far enough away! If someone sneezes close to you, your mask may now be more of a carrier of the virus because of the moisture. Make sure you wash your cloth m asks after each use or better.. Throw it out. Health care workers are being forced into reusing their masks while being exposed to large consentrations of the virus..one reason why they're getting sick. Bottom line... Yes.. Use your homemade masks, scarf, whatever ,while keeping distance. Wash or dispose after one use. I'm sure you're all researching other ways to combat infection too and I hope this helps See more

Food for thought: Ok.this has been on my mind off and on for years. I have shared my thoughts on this topic with the patients and therapists that we see at The Sanctuary in Malvern and on occasion at our MFR seminars. It is time that I share my thoughts on a broader scale thru MFR Insight. It’s about that five letter word with the silent p. PSOAS. I am just going to cut to the chase. Straight leg raising exercises are wrecking peoples’ backs and throwing pelvises out. I ...Continue reading

This from my patient, Christine and used with permission: Last February, I had my second knee replacement followed by a course of rather ineffective physical therapy. By summer, I was losing range of motion in the knee so I went back to the surgeon who suggested another course of PT at a different facility. I started in September with that facility which was very good but I felt I was not progressing quickly enough and it was inordinat...ely painful. Then it hit me: Lynn at Windy Woods! She had helped me before so why didn't I think of her sooner? Duh! The day after Lynn worked on my knee and surrounding tissues, the PT session went so smoothly and with much less pain. I continued alternating PT with Lynn's medical massage, made remarkable progress, and in a little over a month had reached my goal of bending my knee 120 degrees! PT stopped then but I am continuing with Lynn and still see improvement. My advice to anyone having joint work done is to do your exercises, find a good physical therapist (Broome Physical Therapy in Johnson City is excellent), and be sure to include Lynn in your recovery team. She helps your body heal itself and that makes all the difference. Thank you, Lynn! See more

I always laugh when someone asks if i do "deep tissue"... deep tissue is not really a specialty. And massage doesn't have to be painful to be effective.

Look closely! Kelly Moore and I did a little experiment here at Columbus, OH MFR I DVD Seminar. We compared the effects of shining the laser pointer thru a liquid (water) and thru a solid (ice). Zoom in....can you see that the laser light flows easily thru the water and shines brightly on my hand? However, when the laser hit the solidity of the ice cube, light could not pass thru. This is what happens in our body. The fascial system is a body wide system of communication com...posed of fluid filled microtubules imbedded in a gelatinous ground substance thru which consciousness flows as photon energy like a fiber optic cable. When the normally gelatinous ground substance solidifies from injury, stress, trauma and inflammation, it blocks the flow of light energy that carries information thru the body at incredible speeds. Therefore, our light, our consciousness can not get into those areas, setting us up for disease and dysfunction. Left untreated over time, the fascial system tightens even more, to the point where this flow of light energy becomes so impeded that our light begins to go out. Myofascial Release helps bring our light back by restoring the fluidity of the ground substance so this photon energy, our light, our consciousness can get thru again. This is when true healing can occur! Valerie McGraw,

A new study finds the key role of bone in regulating the fight or flight response. In response to alarm signals from the brain, nerves within bone release osteocalcin, which immediately lowers the parasympathetic "brake" and lets the fight or flight response take over! https://m.phys.org//2019-09-bone-adrenaline-flight-respons This research is no surprise to anyone that studies or works with fascia, the connective tissue network of the body that is especially dense around t...he muscles. Fascia is known to play a huge role in the fight or flight nervous system and is also continuous with bone. Although we think of bone as "solid," 20% of it is actually water, and electrical charges and movement of this water transmits mechanical messages through bone, just like it does through fascia. In fact some scientists call bone "mineralized fascia." According to a recent review article, "bone is part of the fascial continuum...that constantly transmits and receives mechano-metabolic information." https://www.cureus.com//16943-bone-tissue-is-an-integral-p It is fascinating to see how scientists are unravelling the complex interplay between the nervous and musculoskeletal systems!

Water is fluid, soft and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong. Lao Tzu

Recent post from Malvern clinic. Tough Love Hi, it’s Andrea Bomenka, office manager at The Sanctuary. I checked with John about using the word ‘crisis’ and he said that Myofascial Release is about honesty and tough love. There is no sense in trying to soften the impact that it can have.... What you can say to client’s is that After treatment you can sometimes feel better, but many times you will have what’s called a healing crisis which means you will get stirred up anywhere from a mild increase in your symptoms to a major flare up. If you don’t do this, it will feel like a crisis to your patient’s and client’s and will unnecessarily scare them. We must be honest with our patients.

I feel "bracing" patterns in my patients all the time. They are not easily, or not all recognized by the person who is experiencing them. As I started Pilates this past year, I realized some of my own. My brain would not send the signals to my muscles to engage in certain positions. Only by allowing my body to slowly move into those positions in a safe environment was I able to overcome those old bracing patterns.
