Time to follow the bottle... Once used mostly as a blend addition wine, , Nero d’Avola is now popular as a single varietal and very often found as the go-to Italian table wine throughout Italy. Especially when roasted or game meats are involved - think grilled steaks or braised rabbit. The Nero d'Avola varietal is traditionally grown in the borough of Avola, a town located in the province of Siracusa. First vines are dated back to the 15th century - some say the Greek br...ought the vines there. The area has a mild climate in winter (think not much frost)adue to the Monti Iblei, mountains shielding the area from north and north-west winds. So grapes grow well here. The region is mostly flat plains and sparse low hills. All which contribute to not just the consistent and abundant grape production but the quality of the harvest, too. Travel very to the very south of Sicily and you'll find that the soil is clay-rich with some volcanic properties. Which contributes to the complexity of the wine. Wine makers like to do a combo of stainless steel fermentation and oak aging. I've personally only ever had Nero D'Avola from Italy, but some Cali producers are experimenting with it now. When examining the wine you will notice a beautiful rich color - something like cherry or ruby red. The aroma will be, well, winy. But there will be notes of red and dark fruit. The flavor matches with a full and warm body - like a handful of warm ripe red cherries would taste. The wine is dry, no sweetness present but a nice amount of acid so that the mouthfeel is not so heavy. Wineries to visit in Sicily: Cusamano Winery The Cusumano estate and winery, spearheaded by two brothers and their father, Francesco Cusumano, boast estate grown wines from 1,000 acres of from 7 different vineyard spread throughout Sicily. Duca di Salaparuta This is one of Sicily’s oldest and most prominent wineries. Originally founded in 1824 it has been an influential Sicilian wine producer since its founding. Today the company has extensive vineyard holdings throughout Sicily and markets a variety of premium red and white wines from primarily native varieties. The pride of the estate is its Duca Enrico red wine. First produced in 1984, it was the first single varietal Nero d’Avola wine produced in Sicily. It is a highly regarded, perennial award-winning and expensive wine that typically retails in the $60 to $70 price range. Feudo Maccari The Maccari winery operates at the intersection of tradition and innovation. While the primary focus of the vineyards is on native varieties such as Nero d’Avola and Grillo, some international varieties like Syrah are also planted. Modern techniques and innovations are on full display in Maccari’s winemaking and cellaring operations. In the spotlessly-clean vinification and ageing rooms row-after-row of stainless steel tanks as well as eggshell-shaped concrete tanks, French oak barriques and large wooden casks are on full display.
