Just read the following post on my feed. Ridvan (Ekpe) Foxhall is someone I have known since coming to NY in 1991. She is without a doubt tops on my list of the... most admired people I know. She was born in Nigeria, attended high school in Panchgani, India, and raised her family in Peekskill. She is the founder and director of New Era Creative Space, a 501(c)(3) charitable children’s art and culture organization since 2013, as well as the Children’s Theatre of Peekskill. I am also friends with her husband Eric. My heart is full of emotion reading this post. I mostly admire this family from afar due to my own busy life as well as feelings of unworthiness in relation to what I perceive to be its superior spiritual station in relation to mine, but what do any us really know about such things? I don’t think I am going too far out on a limb by saying that if you to are moved by Ridvan’s plea, she would be considerably solaced by contributions to the non-profit. I am posting the link below. America must do better. White people must do better. Wake up America. In March my daughter was a victim of what was obviously a hate crime in which her friend was brutally stabbed and the law has the audacity to tell us not to jump to conclusions while the perpetrator a White man is pleading mental illness to get off with a lesser sentence. Doesn’t matter that they found automatic weapons in his home and a confederate flag, we who want justice are not to jump to conclusion when a White man attacks three Black girls one of which had to fight for her life. What happened to Ahmaud is not an isolated case. This is just one case that has been highlighted in the media. I bet there are many more cases of Black people being killed or wounded because of hate crimes that will not make it to the news. I have to come to terms with the fact that every time my son and daughter leave home they are at risk, and White friends have the audacity to suggest time and again that everything is not about race. Well for me it is. The daily micro aggressions are real. The fact that no matter how hard we work, it’s not enough. The fact that Black peoples are dying at higher rates and at the same time experiencing discrimination and death by law enforcement while White men with guns storm a federal building and cops stand there patiently as they put peoples lives in jeopardy, pisses me off. Our health, education, jobs and life are at risk on a daily basis just because we are Black. Black people have been burying their children for centuries for crimes perpetuated against us simply because we are Black. This has to STOP!!!! The fact that COVID19 is bringing the injustices that have plagued this country to peoples attention isn’t news for Black people. We have known all along that racism is America’s most persistent evil, because we suffer it daily. The next time a White friend tells me that White privilege and White fragility is not a thing or is overstated, or that Blue Lives matter or all lives matter too, please step aside and out of my life because I do not have the patience to educate you and you are not only clearly part of the problem, you are what keeps it going strong. So White and White passing friends get into this fight, educate your White children because like it or not, they are being socialized to be racists. It’s not enough to say you believe in equality, or that you have that one or two Black friends... that doesn’t make you an anti-racist. The work is challenging, painful and uncomfortable and needs all of us to step up and fight for humanity. There is a war out there on Black bodies and if you care, you need to step up, educate yourself and do something about it. End of rant by an angry Black woman. Back to doing art.
