Woodlawn Taxpayers Association 01.12.2020

Dear Neighbors, You may have heard rumors in the past few days about Covid-19 infections in Woodlawn. The Taxpayers Association would like to notify everyone of the facts and what we are doing about it. According to the NYC Department of Health, our zip code -- 10470 -- currently has a higher rate of infection than any other part of the city. Based on the most recent data available, our average daily positive rate is 18.24% and climbing. ... This is more than 11 points higher than the entire city's current average of 7.07%. And, although zip code 10470 includes a very small part of Wakefield, the vast majority of cases are in Woodlawn. In short, we have a severe problem. See the full NYC DOH data here. In response, the Board of the Taxpayers Association is working with local elected officials and the city's Test and Trace Corps to bring a mobile testing unit to our neighborhood. This would provide free local Covid tests to any resident. Until then, please call your doctor or 311 if you are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19, such as: - Fever/chills - New or worsening cough - Difficulty breathing - Extreme fatigue - Loss of taste and smell - Muscle or body aches Free tests are already available at many locations throughout the city, even for those without symptoms. Call 311 or visit https://www.nychealthandhospitals.org/covid-19-testing-sit/ Finally, it is essential that all residents follow mask-wearing and social-distancing rules. A young person might never experience symptoms, but he or she could easily pick up the virus and spread it to others who are more vulnerable. Multiple scientific studies have shown that masks provide protection for both wearers and those around them. We will continue to keep our community informed as the situation evolves. Sincerely, The Woodlawn Heights Taxpayers & Community Association
