"I am a very fragmented person. I don’t do one kind of work, even though I think I am more associated with the work as a kind of photography practice. I have been working for 30 years and I have done a lot of different things and the pleasure of it is that sincevery few people make a living as an artistwhy not just do what you want to do. Instead of conforming to the model of what one thinks one should do, why not just do it? Just get all of those demons out of one’s system and all the pleasures and all the fantasies and just run with them; and that has been terrible for my career but wonderful for my soul. - Larry Sultan, on his photographic practice. Shown here: Tasha's Third Film from the series The Valley, 1998, as featured in our exhibition Larry Sultan: Domestic Theater. On view until April 6!
I'm interested in portraying a world that compensates for what we're missing -- the plentitude that we would like to see that isn't there. My work is really about trying to show suburban life as complex as I think it is, through metaphors and stories, about trying to tell these stories clearly and poignantly without them becoming cliches, about recovering some of the longing and loss of this familiar American-dream landscape. - Larry Sultan Please join us this Thursday, February 21 from 6-8pm for the opening of Larry Sultan: Domestic Theater! Work from the series Pictures from Home, Untitled Home Movie Stills, The Valley, and editorial work for Wallpaper* magazine and Bottega Veneta will be on display.
