Do you know a teenager looking for something fun and creative to do over their winter break? Tell them about YoFi Fest’s Quaran-Teen Cinema Showcase! This has b...een an unusual and difficult year for teens, so YoFi Fest wants to give them a great opportunity to express themselves, share their stories and use creativity for positive wellness. Being a teenager is difficult no matter what, but the COVID-19 pandemic is making it even harder. As remote learning, social distancing and a disruption of our normal lives test the mental and emotional well-being of people of all ages, it’s an especially challenging time for teens. A new survey, commissioned by National 4H Council and conducted by the Harris Poll, reveals that 7 out of 10 teenagers are struggling with mental health issues in this stressful time of uncertainty brought by the coronavirus outbreak. But rather than sharing their vulnerabilities with one another, approximately two-thirds of the teens said they felt pressure to keep their feelings to themselves, pretend to feel better so as not to worry anyone, or deal with their feelings on their own. The good news is that to cope with these feelings, Gen Z is turning to creative pursuits for self-care. A vast majority of them (88%) say that expressing themselves creatively has helped them to de-stress or feel less anxious during this time. Many studies have shown that teenagers can increase focus, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve their overall well-being by incorporating creativity into their lives. Creating something provides a sense of accomplishment and empowerment for many teens who currently feel powerless. It also provides a distraction and break from the daily routine. To encourage this creativity, YoFi Fest is hosting its Quaran-Teen Cinema Showcase. Teenagers are invited to make and submit two minute films that share their stories, experiences, thoughts and feelings about the pandemic and its effect on their lives. The movies can be scripted, documentary, interviews, music videos, animation, dance, poems, puppet shows, or whatever format best tells the story. The films will be presented free online in February and all participating filmmakers will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment (great to include when applying to schools and jobs!). While they may not be able to gather in real life, teenagers can use this showcase to create positive awareness and support for one another and the issues they care about. YoFi Fest wants them to know that they are not alone and we are all in this together. This program is made possible in part by the generous support of AT&T. Entry is free for all teenage students, but films must be received by January 17, 2021, and cannot be longer than two minutes. Details and entry forms at YoFiDMAC.com/quaran-teen
