@frieze @miaimaniharrison observes in her interview with Shikeith about his solo show at @mattressfactory in Pittsburgh, that ‘Feeling the Spirit in the Dark’, feels as much like an act of spiritual cleansing as an exhibition. **** @shikeith #shikeith #yossimilo

ANGELA DUFRESNE’S ‘GENA ROWLANDS’ PAINTINGS In @angelduche's series of Gena Rowlands paintings, Dufresne creates "close up" portraits to work through conflicting and coexisting facets of identity and womanhood. I will try to be who I am, Dufresne has said, in my body with the tools that I have. Repeated across canvases are depictions of Rowlands in different film projects, presenting opposing, balancing and interdependent aspects of a singular psyche. In films such as... A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Gloria (1980) and Opening Night (1977), the deftness with which Rowlands is able to portray emotionally authentic, conflicted characters is complemented and amplified in Dufresne’s mural-sized portraits complicating character types in favor of nuance and complexity. Now on view in ‘Long and Short Shots’ at @yossimilo, through Saturday, March 13. *** #angeladufresne #longandshortshots #yossimilo #genarowlands

OPENING TODAY Angela Dufresne’s exhibition of new mural-sized paintings, ‘Long and Short Shots’, opens today with extended gallery hours from 11 AM 8 PM. Her first solo show at @yossimilo extends from her 2018 Kemper Museum solo exhibit, ‘Making a Scene’, featuring paintings compositionally linking the history of painting and cinema. Monumental, complex long shots are featured alongside large- and small-scale close-up portraits. Dufresne’s (American, b. 1969) new pain...tings vibrate with atomistic energy in which figure and atmosphere have equivalent force. Viewers of her large-scale, long-shot paintings are encouraged to take the position of a camera, panning across the canvas in order to catch all the glorious, sometimes hidden details, such as the sudden appearance of a James Ensorlike mask, with scary horns and a grimace or, tucked away in a thick crowd, a tiny scene of a monkey riding a dog, Kentucky Derby style. Erotic body parts, like so many prosthetic devices, pepper the canvas: fiery nipples; flying phalluses; muscular buttocks; exposed, sometimes non-gender specific genitals; beckoning eyes and hands. But we glimpse them as if through a zoetrope, flickering past us in phases of motion as we travel across the projection screen of Dufresne’s quixotic mind. 1. Jewelry Shop Parent Trap (2019). @shikeith: O’ my body, make of me a man who always questions! is influenced by spiritual traditions from the African diaspora, significantly, the legacy of conjure magic and the ritual practices of Black people enslaved in the American South. The title is a quote from Frantz Fanon’s noted book Black Skin, White Masks, which illustrates how Black men internalize racists myths produced by colonial societies, leading to them damaging their psyches. Occurring in the photograp...h is a scene that dramatizes both the symbolic process of the laying on of hands followed in Christianity and a spiritual exorcismmarking a moment towards ridding Black men of the terrible histories that still haunt our psyches today. Shikeith’s ‘Ceremonies’ Online Viewing Room premieres new works by the artist, including the above featured 50x60" photograph O’ my body, make of me a man who always questions!, 2020.
