Juneteenth is celebrated each year as a day of freedom and emancipation, commemorating the abolition of slavery. Earlier this week, the US Senate passed a bill ...to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday. As we join partners in New York City and across the nation in recognizing this important history, we remain focused on the crucial work to be done to combat race-based inequities for all children, families and communities. Happy Hanukkah to all those who celebrate! Hanukkah (also spelled as ‘Chanukah’) is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime festival of lights, celebrated with a nightly menorah (or Hanukkiah) lighting, special prayers, and fried foods. This year, Hanukkah runs from December 10-18. We asked some of our teens who observe Hanukkah what their favorite family traditions are! Nikki, YBNY ‘21: I love hanukkah! Every year (but obviously not this year) my grandma hosts a huge party at ...her house for all the cousins. There has to be at least 20 of us, and she makes the biggest batches of chicken, soup, latkas, applesauce and a bunch of other stuff. The latkas are my favorite. I look forward to them every year. It means so much because I rarely get to see all my cousins so this big celebration is always so much fun! Hanukkah is absolutely my favorite. Ben (seen above!), YBNY ‘22: My favorite Chanukah tradition is lighting the Hanukkiah. For eight days, my family and I gather to consecutively light one more candle, starting at one. Afterwards, we put on happy Jewish music and eat dinner together. We listen to Jewish Hanukkah music on a CD (I know, so old fashion) and eat jelly donuts, play a traditional "gambling" game with kosher skittles as the money, and eat latkas (fried potato skrips stuck together) as well as more filling food. I normally help buy the ingredients with my brother, but seldom help make the meal. What are your favorite Hanukkah traditions? Let us know! And read more about Hanukkah here: https://www.chabad.org//aid/10/jewish/What-Is-Hanukkah.htm #hanukkah #chanukah #holidays #family #traditions
