The Stonewall Riots, which began #OTD in 1969, were a series of uprisings started by trans women of color like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, which served... as a catalyst for the modern gay rights movement. Today we honor the trans women and activists who paved the way for our generation to continue the fight for equity in the LGBTQIA+ community. To honor the work of pioneering trans women of color who came before us, it is time for all of us to step into the fight to dismantle systems of oppression still at work against the LGBTQIA+ communityparticularly those who also belong to BIPOC communities.

Today, as we celebrate Juneteenth- the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States- we take a look back and look forward at the progress made toward #RacialJusticeinAmerica and the work that remains until we are all truly free. At YWCA, we are committed to doing this work in communities all across the country to #eliminateRacism.

The YWCA has been honored to receive $1 million from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott based on our ceaseless efforts toward racial justice and women’s empowerment programs in the Southern Tier!! We are so excited and blessed to have been chosen as one of the 384 organizations to receive such an unexpected grant in recognition of all that the staff and programs have done for our community over the past 125 years. As Mackenzie stated, "This kind of encouragement has a special power when it comes from a stranger, and it works its magic on everyone." Our gratitude is unmeasurable!

FRIDAY 12/18/20-Young Wonders will be closed. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience to our families. We know how important it is to be reliable so everyone can get to work. Unfortunately, today's snow removal and the clearing of roads did not go as planned. Many staff are still snowed in, on roads that have not been touched. Their safety is a concern, as well as having enough staff to run the day's program effectively. If you have any questions, please contact L...aura Gates-Weeks at [email protected] Our sincerest apologies. See you all on Monday! Stay safe, everyone!
