Monday, Feb. 15 is Presidents Day, also known as Washington's Birthday. It's a federal holiday that is always celebrated on the third Monday of February. The first incarnation of this holiday was in 1796 to commemorate George Washington's birthday.

Dewitt Clinton was the 6th Governor of New York State in 1825, a York Rite Freemason, and former Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of New York. As Governor, Clinton was largely responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal. He was also a leader in civic and state affairs, such as improving the New York public school system, encouraging steam navigation, and modifying the laws governing ciminals and debtors.
