This beautiful poem was written by Steve Butler. Thank you, Steve! The Irish Shop In town on a well-known avenue ... a shop bore a sign that the locals knew a little shamrock hung outside and the tidy shop showed the owners pride Inside the wealth of Irish ware brought me back to County Clare. Irishness condensed on shelves; a Guinness mug, ceramic elves. woolen, china, crystal things, good luck charms, and rainbow things. Teas and jams and breakfast meats, shortbread cookies and other sweets. Jewelry from the Emerald Isle held admiring eyes awhile. Flat caps and tweedy hats, sturdy sticks for walking. The proprietor's wit in a cable knit and the gift he had for talking. One day I passed the little shop where the shamrock had appeared. The window bare with no one there and all the shelves were cleared. I'd heard the gent might close the place, perhaps he had retired? Then I saw in a neighbors face the truth when I inquired. I removed the hat he'd sold to me and stood where the shamrock used to be. I thought how far we'd often roam, fingering its tweedy brim. The Irishman, he'd gone back home when the pipes had called for him.
