Previous research has shown that individuals (and muscles) who possess a larger proportion of fast twitch muscle fibers are more likely to experience greater fa...tigue after a workout. This is because fast twitch fibers more easily experience myofibrillar damage and excitation-contraction coupling failure. This study extends those findings to show that individuals who possess a larger proportion of fast twitch muscle fibers are more likely to experience overreaching (and also fail to experience super-compensation) as a result of a block of higher volume endurance training.
