This is in Georgetown, Guyana and not Georgetown in DC.
Travels with Bill: Interpreting the Thanks In the beginning of the year I traveled as an interpreter for the Bill Cook Foundation in South and Central America. In 14 days, I was on 13 planes as Bill and I traveled to Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Guatemala. We were on a mission to listen and learn. In each country we met with organizations that the Foundation supports (or was hoping to support) to understand what they are doing, and how to best support their critical work. Each ...organization had a unique history with its own challenges, but one thing was consistent: We were showered with love and thanks. The children, the families, and the staff all expressed gratitude towards Bill and me, with words, food, and beaming smiles. I began to think about what it was they were thanking us for. My specific contribution was interpreting and some problem-solving skills. But most of the people thanking me had dedicated their entire lives to serving others. They are the ones working every daysupporting people in the most severe situations, gathering scant resources to educate families living in extreme poverty, aiding children living on the street, and caring for girls who are victims of sexual trafficking. All I had to do was agree to travel during my vacation. Traveling with the Bill Cook, I realized that we had the easy job. I should be the one giving praise and thanks to those people we visited, as their job is so much difficult than mine. Of course, much of the good work they do would not be possible without the donations and connections that come through the Bill Cook Foundation. The simple but essential task of making a donation helps real-world heroes do wondrous things. I am extending their thanks to you, the supporters of the Bill Cook Foundation. Note: This guest post was written by James Canning, an intern ( SUNY Geneseo ’20) with the Bill Cook Foundation.
More than a mealan epic journey.
