This Week in Saratoga County History Who was Saint Isaac Jogues? Submitted by Town of Saratoga Historian Sean Kelleher Before we address this question, we should acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land when I write this article - the Iroquois Confederacy and the Algonquians - and pay our respect to their elders’ past, present and emerging. One answer is that Saint Isaac Jogues is the statue up on Lake George. He is honored as one of the first white European men ...to gaze upon a most beautiful and pristine body of water. He named the lake Lac Du Saint Sacrement, which means the Lake of the Blessed Sacrament. That name remained for the lake for more than 100 years until British General William Johnson renamed it for his King, George II. The Artisan Market at Brookside will be temporarily closed today and tomorrow (12/5 and 12/6) due to a town court employee testing positive for COVID-19. This employee was not in the building while the Artisan market has been open. We will be doing a deep cleaning of the building and hope to re-open Thursday (12/10). Please follow our facebook page for more information.

This Week in Saratoga County History - The Death of Gideon Putnam Submitted by Charlie Kuenzel December 1, 1812 was the date on which the founding father of Saratoga Springs, Gideon Putnam died. Gideon and his wife Doanda Putnam were probably the most influential couple in the formation of our great city. Gideon was originally from Sutton Massachusetts, while Doanda was from Connecticut. Shortly after their marriage in 1787, the two began to strike out for a new beginning... in Vermont and then on to the Saratoga Lake area. None of those location worked for them until they moved to Saratoga Springs in 1789 and it all seemed to fit.
