The Village of Catskill has received several littering complaints throughout the Village during the past few weeks. We have no choice but to post a warning regarding the garbage in Dutchman’s and Elliott Park. Our Public Works Department is spending several hours each morning picking litter in our parks. The Supt. Of public works has placed a dumpster in Dutchmans for use of patrons even though this is a carry in and carry out park. There are garbage cans place throughout El...liott Park for use of patrons. The grounds at the Freight Masters Building along the river has also seen litter spread throughout the grounds. The Village Board, members of the Police Dept and Department of Public Works will start to monitor the parks and public areas for violations. We as a community have worked hard to maintain the parks and public areas so everyone can enjoy them. We are asking for the support of the entire community in keeping these areas neat and clean. Please do not stack your garbage alongside of the cans and please pick up after yourselves. Use the dumpster in Dutchmans and the cans in Elliott. Thank You. See more

I have been aware of the recent discussions concerning the closing of Main Street during this difficult time over the past weeks. The problem with closing Main Street is very simple. We have major infrastructure problems with diverting the traffic. Anything is possible and these obstacles could possibly be overcome. Water Street is one way from Church to Main and split at the bottom level. The increased traffic on Water Street could cause major problems. Closure on Main... Street would also result in the closure of William Street, Thompson Street, Cook Street and Church Street, not to mention all the alley ways on the West side of Main Street. All traffic from Main Street would be pushed to residential areas on Spring Street, West Main Street, New Street, North Street and very possibly Woodland, Prospect, Liberty and Greene Street. Parking would also become a major problem for anyone coming to Main Street to support our local businesses. We would lose 140 parking spots on the Street. I could possibly leave the municipal lot open, but that would mean placing a police officer at that location full time. It was mentioned this morning that other communities have closed streets successfully to promote business. These communities may have the infrastructure to support changing traffic patterns with very little effect on the community, unfortunately The Village of Catskill does not have the ability to accomplish this without disrupting most of the people residing in this community. I have never supported the closure of Main Street and I urge the Village Trustees to research this issue, and I will support their decision. Dave Darling Chief of Police.

The Catskill Police Department urges taxpayers to watch out for scams about COVID-19 (coronavirus) relief checks. We are issuing a warning about coronavirus-related scams, urging taxpayers to watch out for criminals who attempt to get their hands on people's recovery checks. We urge the community to take extra care during this period. The IRS isn't going to call you asking to verify or provide your financial information so you can get an economic impact payment or your refund... faster This also applies to surprise emails that appear to be coming from the IRS." The coronavirus relief law that President Trump signed last week provides for one-time payments to people of up to $1,200 per adult and $500 per child. In most cases, the IRS will be able to send the payments to people via direct deposit without people taking any additional actions. The IRS also stated that Social Security recipients who aren't typically required to file tax returns will also automatically receive their payments. People who haven't previously provided direct-deposit information to the IRS will be able to do so via a secure portal starting in mid-April. The IRS has seen a wave of new phishing scams, and they urge taxpayers to watch out for emails, text messages, websites and efforts via social media that seek money or personal information. The agency said that scammers may ask people to sign over their direct payment, tell people that they need to verify their personal information to receive their check, or mail people a bogus check and then ask them to verify information to cash it. While you are waiting to hear about your economic impact payment, criminals are working hard to trick you into getting their hands on your money, The Catskill Police Department is asking the community to remain vigilant and skeptical of any calls, emails or texts they may receive. If you have any questions or concerns you should not give any information or funds out before you call your local law enforcement agency.
