Napping or dead? season is upon us!
After a crazy year in the meat processing world, we are thrilled to finally have a consistent schedule with a great, animal welfare approved, local processor (just an hour away in Altamont)! We just picked up our first load of beef from Double L Ranch, so our web store is reloaded. For now check out our subscriptions and large bundles, we'll post individual steaks once our regulars get a chance to sign up. https://app.barn2door.com/e/QO0B5/all
Thiccness is our primary breeding goal, and we’re pretty much nailing it
Little pre game snow before the biggun comin Wednesday night. If we’re prepared or not remains to be seen.
Just unloaded this beast, all the way from Green Pastures Farm in Missouri. This is a round hay bale unroller. It can tow behind an ATV, allowing us to move our cattle around the whole property this winter spreading out the nutrients and seed from the hay we purchase. No more bed packs or tractor ruts in the field. And no more unrolling 1000 pound bales by hand while cows try to eat them!... Can’t wait to show you all this thing in action, and see the results next season. #grassfedbeef #hudsonvalleyfarm
Celebrate your Labor Day with a special bundle from our farm! We put together a sample bundle of our grilling favorites (Ribeye, NY Strip, smoked Kielbasa sausage), paired with a beautiful bouquet from our friend at That Bloomin' Farm (including forage sunflowers from our pastures). Labor Day Weekend only for now, but we'll add these bouquets more regularly if people are interested!
Last year nothing would grow here besides the ever resilient Sudan grass. This year it’s about 75% weeds like mugwort, golden rod, cockle burr, stilt grass, knotweed, etc.. the remaining 25% being native pasture grasses. The cows will munch and stomp the weeds on their way to the much preferred grass. This will break up the compaction and help the field retain much more rain water. This winter we’ll unroll round bales (free pasture seed mix!) and let the cows stomp it in to a...dd even more organic matter. This spring I bet we flip the weeds to grass ratio. It’s not about micro targeting the weeds. Knotweed for example, can regrow from tiny tinyyyy fragments you probably won’t notice. Spot spraying with roundup won’t do the job, just a waste of money. This is about changing the conditions in the soil. Strong pasture grasses will outcompete any of these weeds. This is the only permanent solution. You just need to be patient as we’re pooping and walking our way to a better future! See more
The fencing saga continues
Our cows are 100% grassfed so you don't have to worry about what your food ate
Great first weekend offering our #grassfedbeef and #pasturedchicken for preorder at the Tiny Hearts Farm Store in Hillsdale. We appreciate everyone who tried us out, and hope Grassfed Beef pairs as well with flowers as it does with everything else! Thanks so much to Tiny Hearts Farm for including us and to Amelia August for fulfilling the orders!
Not just any cow can get fat and happy on a grass-only diet, so we wrote an article about how we choose what breeds to raise. Let us know what you think, and share with anyone who loves cows! https://www.dirtydogfarm.com//breeds-we-raise-for-100-gras
Summer is a great time to work in the woods. We’re installing high-tensile fence along the back and sides of our farm. This will save hours of labor per week (we can stop setting up temporary perimeter fences and just subdivide) and help us sleep better knowing there‘s a stout perimeter fence keeping everybody where they belong! Thanks to Green Pastures Farm for the invaluable fencing knowledge they share and supplies they recommend, especially the Timeless Fence posts
A dry summer is hard for Grass-fed Beef producers, but we're making the most of it. Check out our blog to learn about our strategies for producing your food and healing the land (so we're more resilient in the future), even when the weather doesn't cooperate! https://www.dirtydogfarm.com/dirty-d/2-ways-to-beat-drought

98 today so the cows took a break from pasture to hang out in one of the hedgerows. They stay cool, and we get their help stomping back the brush and rose bushes choking our woods. Good deal. #grassfedbeef #regenerativeag #hudsonvalley
Pastures are still thin with just over a full year of cows grazing back on this previously mono cropped property. The clover is strong and that’s a good sign that the soil is changing to a more hospitable environment for grasses. Red clover is the most prevalent in the dormant seed banks of the northeast. You and the cows can create an environment for the grass to grow and it will grow again without any extra seeding! Unfortunately/fortunately we have beeves to feed and so we help the grass along by adding organic matter and seeding high yielding forage and tillage mixes. More on seed dormancy later!
