Apokries, which means without meat is a time period referencing the tradition of avoiding meat during lent. During this time there are many carnivals throughout Greece, many steeped in rich traditions and history. The idea of feasting before fasting is as old as civilization, but carnival as a specific event is very much tied to western Christian and Eastern Orthodox churches. It is the period where people join in celebration prior to observing a period of fasting physically (from food) as well as spiritually, in preparation for Easter. Most carnival events are connected with the ancient worship of the Greek god of wine Dionysus. Domna Samiou (Greek: ; 12 October 1928 10 March 2012[1]) was a prominent Greek researcher and performer of Greek folk music and Turkish folk music. She received her first formal musical training from Simon Karas. For over half a century she collected, recorded, and performed traditional songs of Greece (demotika), around the world, appealing not only to the Greek diaspora, but also introducing non-Greek audiences to traditional Greek folk music and Turkish folk music.
