#ThrowbackThursday Today is a special day to remember some great #STEAM education programs HBHV presented, together with Thomas Cole National Historic Site and Olana State Historic Site art educators! #tc20thursday #IMLSmedals
#TeachingTuesday affords another opportunity to share a brand new bridge book! Books are a great way to excite students to study STEAM. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Today's book, How Do Bridges Work? is authored by Roman Belyaev. Roman is Russian, lives in Moscow and has great insight about bridges of the world. Engineering and Science can and should transcend borders and language. Take a look inside Roman's book, published by b small publishing in the UK, and now available in the U.S. at http://bit.ly/BridgeBk. Zoom in to read the text. The hard cover book has high quality inside pages that give the book an artful look, but makes it difficult to scan clearly.
This is exciting news! Historically the New York State Bridge Authority has been known for completing all projects in an efficient and timely fashion. This deck replacement project is the largest project in BA history. Due to excellent planning and quick response to contractors' requests for clarification about any project issues from the NYS Bridge Authority's Engineering and Maintenance Department, as well as, dependable and valued project inspectors, this project is expected to be complete nine months earlier than the original completion date.
Thank you New York State Bridge Authority! The Hudson Valley loves our iconic Mid-Hudson Bridge! Any business that has experienced financial difficulty during the past year due to Covid, please message us to receive a model to design and install at no cost for the model!. HBHV is recognizing businesses wishing to help our area return to full economic health. Message soon; we have limited supply.
#TeachingTuesday Today we begin our focus on truss structures. A truss bridge is, in simplest terms, a structure built of steel, or wood, triangles. Given that a triangle cannot be distorted by stress, a truss gives a stable form capable of supporting considerable external loads over a large span. Trusses are popular for bridge building because they use a relatively small amount of material for the amount of weight they can support. Open each photo for additional content.
#BridgeMusic is back on the Mid-Hudson Bridge! Be sure to take advantage of the nice weather and play some Bridge Music. Also, visit the Bridge Music Mid-Hudson Bridge model displayed in Waryas Park, the work of artist Franc Palaia. Joseph Bertolozzi thank you for showing us all such a special way to appreciate our iconic Mid-Hudson Bridge!
ENJOY ANOTHER MID-HUDSON BRIDGE MODEL! Anita Fina, Mid-Hudson Bridge model artist, has her completed model on display this month at Queen City 15 Gallery, 317 Main St. in Poughkeepsie. Gallery hours are 3-7 Fri, 12-7 Sat. and by appointment. The MHB model is alongside several prints of the bridge and oar platters of the "Colors of the Hudson" which are the oar blade designs of the various crews rowing on the Hudson at Poughkeepsie. The bridge depicts the views north and south of the bridge from the vantage point of rowers on the water, and has the suspension part of the bridge colored in the various color combinations of the crews on the water. #queencity15gallery #CityofPoughkeepsie #OurLadyofLourdesHS #PoughkeepsieHS #WappingersHS
Our Bridge Authority bridges have been helping commerce in the Hudson Valley for many years. Think about small, local business when shopping for the holidays. Let's all support local Hudson Valley businesses! #ShoptheHV #ShopSmall #ThinkLocalFirst
The Peekskill Museum shared some amazing photos of the construction of the Bear Mountain Bridge. This iconic structure will turn 100 in less than four years! It opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1924, the first vehicular crossing of the Hudson River south of Albany.
Historic Bridges of the Hudson Valley wishes everyone a happy Thanksgiving!
#HistoricBridgeAwarenessMonth established by HistoricBridges.org states "Throughout November, Historic Bridge Awareness Month explores the spans and arches that carry goods and people across the country. Whether the trusses are only a memory or stand proudly still against the horizon, Historic Bridge Awareness Month recognizes their place in the building of a nation." HBHV, on behalf of the NYS Bridge Authority, celebrates the historic, iconic bridges that cross the mid-Hudson River from the Bear Mountain to the Rip Van Winkle. Which historic structure is your favorite?
Building Bridges is pretty cool, but maintaining them so they don't need to be replaced makes much more sense! Watch for STEM Bridge Curriculum coming to our Facebook page for use by any educator; classroom teachers and homeschoolers.
