Screening For Return To Sports and Play After Covid-19 Infection In Pediatrics: The American Academy of Pediatrics recently issued interim guidelines on returning to sports after a COVID 19 infection. They recommend pediatricians and pediatric providers clear patients with a history of COVID 19 before they resume sports, training and physical education. The guidelines are based on the potential for the COVID virus to cause inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) that m...ay result in scarring. The scarring can cause arrhythmias (irregular heart beat). This is not common but we do not have exact data of how often this occurs as the virus is new. Going forward patients with a positive COVID 19 test will be offered an appointment for an office evaluation 10 -14 days or more after the positive test date, or 10 -14 days after the onset of symptoms. Patients will need to be fever free for 72 hours before they can be seen in the office. The provider will review screening questions and perform a physical exam. Recommendations will be made based on information gathered at the visit. We realize many children had COVID 19 before the recommendations were published and are already participating in gym or sports. We would be happy to see any patient in the office who has a history of COVID 19 infection, but especially those children over age 12. In addition, any child with complaints of chest pain, shortness of breath when playing, heart palpitations and fainting spells should have an evaluation in the office. The AAP recognizes the importance of sports and play for all children and our goal is to allow them to return safely. Please reach out with any questions. We are here to help!

Families that have an infant under the age of 6 months in their household are also considered high risk. In an effort to keep our patients and staff safe we will continue to maintain social distancing in our office. Starting Tuesday, May 26, 2020, all of our locations will be open Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm. Please note there will be no walk-in clinics until further notice. We are seeing well visits for all ages now and we strongly encourage anyone that is overdue to call to schedule an appointment. We have also implemented the following rules to keep our patients, their families, and our staff safe due to COVID-19. These rules were put in place to keep everyone healthy and to redu...ce the number of people entering our office: -We are screening all patients and their families 24 hours prior to their appointments and again at the entrance to our suite to ensure that no one with ill symptoms enters our office. -Per the New York State Governor’s executive order, in an effort to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, we will be requiring all adults attending a visit with their child AND all patients 2 years of age and above, to wear a face mask in the office and for the entirety of their visit. Due to the limited supply of personal protective equipment, we are unable to provide a mask at this time. If you do not have a disposable mask, one can be made out of any cloth household material such as a scarf or bandana. -Also, in an effort to continue social distancing, we are only permitting one parent or guardian to attend the child’s visit. Siblings who do not have their own well visit scheduled are not permitted to attend visits during this time. Thank you for your continued patience as we make changes and as we all work through this COVID-19 pandemic together. If you have any questions, please call our office staff at 716-691-3400.

To protect our staff, our patients, and their families, we are asking that only one parent or caregiver bring his or her child to the scheduled appointment. We are making an exception to this rule for newborn visits only; two parents may attend that appointment. Due to health concerns in the community, we will be conducting a health screening on all of our patients and those accompanying our patients prior to the scheduled appointment. For the safety of your family and others, it is important that we reach you prior to your scheduled appointment. If you have questions pertaining to coronavirus and your child or a close contact of your child is not currently having respiratory related symptoms, please send us a message through your patient portal or visit our website for further information.
