As we head into winter and COVID community spread remains high, people remain unsheltered and with heightened health risks on Long Island, and others have lost their lives to the unthinkable living situation and traumatic experience of homelessness. Please take a moment to remember those that have been lost and commit to doing everything we can to connect people with stable and safe housing. Each Spring, LICH hosts a candlelight vigil to bring awareness and commitment to ad...dressing homelessness on LI. More information to come in that event soon. LICH Street Outreach Team Messaging System: 631-464-4314 x 118 To learn more about participating in our annual street homeless sweep in January, or to participate on our Street Outreach Committee, please email [email protected]. #HousingIsHealthcare #housingfirst #streetoutreach Please also consider donating to LICH to fund ongoing street outreach efforts and obtain necessary supplies to keep people alive while on the street.

"Communities need different types of housing not only for different types of households, but different stages in the household life cycle," Calvin said. "A young couple would need different housing than a family of five, which needs different types of housing than a senior living on their own." https://www.newsday.com//rpa-regional-plan-island-housing-

What happens when you give homeless individuals $7,500 to homeless people? The people who received cash transfers moved into stable housing faster and saved enough money to maintain financial security over the year of follow-up. They decreased spending on drugs, tobacco, and alcohol by 39 percent on average, and increased spending on food, clothes, and rent, according to self-reports. "Most people become homeless as a result of several factors working together, not just one singular event. For many homeless people, a singular event that caused their homelessness can’t be pinpointed at all. It’s the overall prevalence of insufficient income and the lack of affordable housing that makes homelessness so common. Until we’re able to provide a sufficient amount of affordable housing to provide for those who need it, we won’t be able to eradicate homelessness, even if we somehow address all of the issues on this list." https://invisiblepeople.tv/how-homeless-people-become-hom/
