Who is ready to get back on the Canal? We just can’t wait to get the season started!

Once a structure is torn down, there is no turning back. Sometimes demolition isn't the only answer. This is Richardson's Canal House in Bushnell's Basin, in th...e town of Perinton. Saved from demolition in the 1970s, the National Landmark is one of the most important historic treasures in the area. See more

Tale of Two Bridges: Two Lift Bridges continue to get a massive makeover/rehab along the Erie Canal here in WNY. Top image is the 1914 Fairport Lift Bridge, b...ottom image is the 1913 Spencerport Lift Bridge and both are being rehabilitated by Buffalo-based construction firm, Hohl Industrial. As you can see, the metal grating on the bridges is being removedthat will be replaced. Crews are working on the counterweight system on both bridges at the moment. In the case of the Spencerport bridge, a cribbing system is keeping the bridge elevated. There’s a lot of symmetry taking place between the twoas lift mechanisms are replaced and rebuilt to last for decades to come. A few of the guys on these jobs helped build the massive Genesee Arch Bridge at Letchworth State Park, one of the best railroad spans in America. I’m told both projects remain right on schedule as both bridges are expected to reopen by the end of November. See more

Restoring an Icon: Quite a sight this week along the Erie Canal in Fairport, NY as rehabilitation work continues there on the 1914 Lift Bridge. Iron workers r...emoved one of the wheel mechanisms, an original part of the bridge which was built by the Lackawanna Bridge Company of Buffalo for installation here in 1913-14. The wheels were loaded on a flatbed and trucked off-site, they will be used as templates to build the new wheels to go in their place. Lots of work taking place here to ensure longterm use of this historic bridge. I’m told the project is right on schedule with the bridge set to re-open in November. Built at a 32 degree angle with the south end higher than the north, there’s not a bridge quite like this oneanywhere. See more

Restoring an Icon: Major rehabilitation work continues on the historic 1914 Lift Bridge along the Erie Canal in Fairport, NY (as it is in Spencerport too). Tho...ugh it’s difficult to see from the ground, major work is taking place here on this unique span, one of the only bridges in the world built on a bias (south end is 32 degrees higher than north end). Noted here by an arrow, workers are approximately 30 feet down the chamber, removing approximately 300,000 pounds of concrete that serve as a counterweight for the mechanism that lifts the bridge. They’ll do the same work on the north side. It appears they’re using a mini excavator to get that work done, work that was performed yesterday in single digit cold. They’ve had an enormous break with the weather with so many mild days, yesterday was not the norm. I’m told the job is right on schedule and it’s expected this iconic bridge will be re-opened to traffic in November. Seemingly, the detours have worked extremely well and folks are able to easily get in and out of the village.
