From #PWArchives: In the fall of 2019, Pioneer Works hosted a one-night-only performance with Brooklyn-based rapper Junglepussy inside Jacolby Satterwhite’s exhibition, You’re At Home. Joined by a DJ set from Nightfeelings, Junglepussy took the PW stage by storm with her unique blend of quick wit and unabashed self-love.
Throwback to Utopia, choreographed by Valerie Green/Dance Entropy , in collaboration with visual artist Keren Anavy and musician Mark Katsaounis. This dynamic performance was staged at Pioneer Works for our March 2019 Second Sundays programming to honor Atelier van Lieshout's exhibition The CryptoFuturist and the New Tribal Labyrinth. Dancers, accompanied by Katsaounis’ score, explored the idea of safety, utilizing 10-foot cylindrical pillars printed with Anavy’s paintings. The performance’s striking energy challenged audiences to think deeply about the intersections of art, dance and design and what utopia might truly look like. #PWArchives https://pioneerworks.org/programs/utopia :Walter Wlodarczyk
In March of 2019, Pioneer works hosted the 37d03d festival, which was built from the ground up by resident-artists over the course of a week. The brainchild of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and The National’s Bryce and Aaron Dessner, 37d03d celebrates the powerful, unexpected results of deep collaboration between artists. 37d03d festivals have produced projects like Kate Stables’ This Is The Kit, Big Red Machine from Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner, and Bonny Light Horseman, a co...llaboration between Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson, and Josh Kaufman. The 2019 festival lineup included Justin Vernon, Big Red Machine, Boys Noize, Bonny Light Horseman, Anaïs Mitchell, Andrew Broder, Crystal Quinn, Eric D. Johnson, Eric T. Carlson, Greg Fox, Josh Kaufman, JT Bates, Kate Stables, Mike Lewis, Resistance Revival Chorus, Shahzad Ismaily, Sinkane, and Trever Hagen. Former Resident Jacolby Satterwhite’s immersive exhibition, You’re at home, was heavily focused on Satterwhite’s mother, Patricia Satterwhite, who suffered from schizophrenia for much of her lifetime. Her sketches portrayed objects of domestic material culture and designs for consumer goods she wanted to see on QVC, which Satterwhite transformed into 3D printed objects. #PWArchives #PWResidency https://pioneerworks.org//jacolby-satterwhite-youre-at-ho/

Antidote is a collaborative online environment and land acknowledgment developed by Salome Asega, Marguerite Hemmings, LaJuné McMillian, and Amber Starks. In a #PWBroadcast interview with Abrons Arts Center, they discuss de-authenticating White supremacy and settler colonialism, fostering Black liberation and indigenous sovereignty in land and cyberspace, and more. We're really interested in tapping into worlds where our bodies and our ancestors' bodies felt free, where our ancestors embodied their own freedom, or just took their own freedom. And we're trying to project these freedom realities and these freedom technologies into digital space. Watch Antidote here: https://vimeo.com/497811762
It's a very lovely Valentine's Day edition of Separate Sundays. Starting at 6 pm on 2/14, we have a huge show just for the occasion including new music from Austin Julian Sley and writing from JP Brammer. We look back at Four Simultaneous Soloists performance series which paired experimental musicians with Anthony McCall's lightworks, and then we talk sustainability and the incredible "Tree of Forty Fruit" with Sam Van Aken. Closing out we hear from our resident astrologer on what it means to be an Aquarius and get sneak peak at Faviola Lopez-Romani's Sound Lab DJ set. Join us!
"In graduate school, I took a photography class and did a series entitled So Lie In It, which comes from the saying You’ve made your bed These are two of the twenty-nine photos. I was thinking a lot about choice and consequence, and how Black women specifically are not usually allowed to redeem their mistakes or own their decisions." Writer Dantiel W. Moniz shares 13 images that provide a glimpse into the moments that informed her debut collection of intimate tales, portraying the fullness of emotions and experiences through residents, especially of young Black girls, living in the Sunshine state. #PWBroadcast https://pioneerworks.org//13-ways-of-looking-dantiel-moniz/
