Welcome back to all those who have just returned to campus! Just FYI, this is the most recent information available from Cornell Student and Campus Life: "There will be no in-person activities after November 26th, 2020. The spring 2021 start date for in-person activities will be determined at a later date with recommendations from health and safety experts." I know we're all anxious to get back on the courts. I'm about to go stir-crazy and start hitting boasts off my bedroom walls. In the meantime, feel free to use this page to share tips for responsible fitness and fun, and make sure to sign up for our mailing list so you'll be the first to know when we're clear to go!
We are still waiting and hoping... but please be sure to sign up for our email list so you can get the latest updates as soon as they happen!
Welcome back to those who have recently returned to campus! We are still awaiting local regulatory guidance to determine when and how recreational squash practice sessions and tournaments can resume. Currently, student organizations at Cornell University are not permitted to hold "competitions of any kind," "activities that include close or physical contact," or "activities in which equipment [is] shared between members." Those restrictions are expected to remain in effect ev...en after the university's planned reassessment of in-person activities on October 5. As the World Squash Federation reported, a study from Politecnico di Torino evaluated over 300 different sports for COVID-19 transmission risk and rated squash a 4/4 or "very high risk." That said, the WSF and its national affiliates have begun to develop protocols for resuming court play in phases. So, stay tuned! And, in the meantime, we encourage you to post tips and ideas for how to stay active and have fun in this current situation (has anyone tried solo outdoor drills?)
Squash in the Time of Coronavirus Alas... Given the recent news, our next tournament will have to wait until the Fall. There was some discussion of trying to get one in before Spring Break (particularly since many of our members are grad students or are otherwise not obliged to join The Great Expulsion) but guidance from the upper echelons of University administration has recommended a hiatus for the rest of the semester.... But... Our ongoing practice times (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:00 PM and Fridays from 3:30 to 5:00 PM) will continue until and unless Grumman closes (call 607-255-1318 to confirm operating status). Cognizant that moderate exercise boosts immune response and quells anxiety, I will be trying my best to make it on Fridays, as much as my right-knee bursitis will allow). Also... We still have a few shirts left, featuring the club's beautiful new logo designed by our own Caroline Marin. There are (4) mediums and (2) smalls remaining. To claim one, Venmo $15.00 to evandwilliams and we'll figure out a handoff. All proceeds will go towards a little party to be held when we're all back together in the Fall! Be well, do good work, and keep in touch!
