I started participating in kickboxing at age 12. My father, jumping on the Tae-Bo fitness trend in 1999, started a subdivision of his already established traditional martial arts school to include fitness kickboxing. My father always encouraged me to stay physically active, so naturally he invited me to participate in this fitness class , predominately made up of women aged 25-50. I was inevitably the youngest person in class, but that was never a deterrent. I always looked t...o the other women in class as role models, guides, or as a launching point for a later conversation with my father. Why do people (even those who aren’t in immaculate physical shape) work out? Why do people love taking your class? How (the hell) do you stay so positive and happy in class? Why are you having the effect on people the way I’m noticeably seeing (and hearing) that you are? Dad always answered my questions with patience and consideration. He knew something inherent about exercise (especially in terms of cultivating my confidence) and group fitness that I didn’t realize until two decades later. He also had a sensitivity towards an individual’s fitness journey that I deeply appreciate to this day. At age 12, I was insecure. I was self conscious, uncertain, and looking to other females for guidance. I participated in kickboxing 2-3 times a week, and my confidence soared. Not only was I learning how to move my body in strong and powerful ways, but I was amongst women !! Strong powerful women whom I admired. And I was doing the same thing they were doing. There was a magical combination of all the aforementioned elements that propelled me, physically and mentally , during a very formative pre teen and teenage time. I never felt physically weak. I never felt mentally alone or isolated from strong, powerful females whom I admired. We are now offering a special TEEN Membership for participants ages 12-18 ** no experience necessary, first class free. Participation is one half the cost of an adult membership. The intention behind this is to encourage impressionable young teens, such as I was once, to grow and empower their mind, body , and spirit. Participation with a fellow parent, guardian, or friend is encouraged. Please message for details, or to schedule a FREE intro class today !! -In health and gratitude, Olivia
