Exercise of the week... Pushups This is the ultimate perseverance exercise. Some of us love them, others hate them, but all of us benefit from them. Pushups, regardless of whether you're doing them on your knees, the balls of your feet, or modifying at a stable surface, activate every muscle in your body, while also spiking your heart rate. The Bar Method style of pushups specifically targets your upper back muscles, triceps, pecs, and abs. ... To set up for pushups, place your legs hip-width apart and parallel; if you're working on your knees, bend your legs, point your toes, and keep your ankles uncrossed. Next, place your hands a bit wider than shoulder-width apart and turn them slightly in. Finally, lift your hips up so they are in line with your ribcage, grip your glutes, pull you abs in, and lift your chin off of your chest. At Bar Method, you're told to do pushups a little differently lift your hips up to align with your ribcage, and as you move, bend your elbows diagonally back towards your ribs. Why? The lift in your hips helps you to protect your lower back and recruit your deep core muscles. The diagonal bend in your elbows allows you to separate your shoulder blades to better access your pecs, biceps, and triceps.
